Photographs, lots of photographs, from different parts of Finland taken by different people. Public- and private places, urban landscapes, and interiors; photographs from places where we spend our time - living spaces. What connects all the pictures is the wallpaper. In these places someone felt that a feminist message, the feminist wallpaper, is needed.
The photographs cover the walls during Megafån's exhibition at Galleri Sinne in Helsinki during the fall of 2007. The exhibition will be a summary of the feminist wallpaper project that began in the spring of 2006. We display a documentation of the entire project, emphasizing the feminist wallpaper as an intervention in the politics of the public space. The exhibition becomes a meeting place for new ideas and thoughts. But everything that already has, and everything that has not yet taken place, every photo opportunity, and every piece of the wallpaper hung is equally important to the project as the exhibition that in the end brings together all these different threads.
800 people took part in the feminist wallpaper project, every one of them came to our mobile studio to be photographed during one of the fourteen opportunities that we arranged. Information about these opportunities was spread through mailing lists, newspapers, and radio. Everyone who participated was given the opportunity to define their own feminism in a speech bubble on the wallpaper.
We intend the wallpaper to be seen, we already have invitations to display it and we will also actively seek places that desire the feminist wallpaper. The most exciting part of the project is nevertheless to see how the project lives on in the hands of others. The finished wallpaper will be sent to all participants and it is up to each of them to decide where to hang their six pieces of the wallpaper. To hang the feminist wallpaper will be a concrete way of occupying space as a feminist. Everyone who hangs the wallpaper is also asked to photograph it in its surroundings.
We excitedly await pictures of the places where the wallpaper has been hung, and also information about where one might have wished to hang it but was not allowed to. Everything that surrounds the project, any counter reactions included, is of interest to the project as a whole.
